Susan Smith had a piano delivered to her home when she was eleven years old. Her inspiration to learn to play came from listening to her mother as she played. Her piano teacher, Myrtle Titus, was also her Mother’s piano teacher and Susan formed a bond with Myrtle that she will always treasure.
Susan formed The Smith Family in 1988. This was a family
band with children Jason, Rodger and Robin. They performed for
numerous events and church concerts in the Wabash Valley.
Around 1991, Susan met mother and daughter Brenda and Kim Secuskie
and they formed Rhapsody, performing around the Wabash Valley and
Indianapolis, many times doing concerts along with “The Smith
Family”.
She joined the Mirage Band in 2000. She performed throughout
the Wabash Valley with Mirage, leaving the band at the beginning of
2006.
In addition to performing with bands, Susan has performed as a solo
act for many years, playing for weddings and receptions, and
functions where dinner music or background music was needed.
She is pianist, organist and choir director at the Coloma Friends
Church. She also plays for Saturday evening Mass at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Rockville. She has played for numerous musicals
at the Historical Ritz Theatre in Rockville, and at North Vermillion
High School. She accompanies area school students at the I.S.S.M.A.
contest at North Vigo High School.
A role that Susan has enjoyed most is that of music teacher.
She gave piano lessons at home for many years. She has been a
Teacher Assistant at the Rockville Christian Church Preschool for
over 17 years, teaching children about singing and musical
instruments.
Susan's group, Rhapsody, recorded a CD entitled “Blessings”.
Perhaps her most prized role has been teaching music to children,
planting the seed so they, too, will know the joy of music.
Susan was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2012.
